Martha Walter

1875 - 1976

 Martha Walter was born in Philadelphia in 1875.  She studied at the Pennsylvania Academy with William Merritt Chase. She was awarded a two-year traveling Cresson Scholarship during which time she visited France, Spain, Italy and Holland.  In Paris, she attended the Académie Grande Chaumiere and the Académie Julian and then she set up her own studio on the Rue de Bagneaux with other women artists.  Before World War I, she returned to the United States and lived in Gloucester, MA.  She also had a studio in New York and taught at the New York School of Art.  She continued to travel back and forth to Paris and in the 1930s she began traveling to North Africa.  She died in 1976.
