Raphael Soyer

1899 – 1987

Raphael Soyer was born
in 1899 in Borisogliebsk, Russia and he moved with his family to
the Lower East Side of New York City in 1913, after they were
deported from Russia by the Tsarist regime.  Because he left
school to support his family, he had to attend free classes at
Cooper Union and at the National Academy of Design. A teacher at
the Art Students League recognized his talent and introduced him
to Charles Daniel, who gave him his first solo exhibition in
1929.   He went on to teach at the Art Students League, the New
School, and the National Academy of Design, and was a member of
the American Institute of Arts and Letters and the National
Academy. He was also the author of three books, “Painter’s
Pilgrimage”, “Homage to Thomas Eakins” and “Self-Revealment, a
Memoir.”  On November 4, 1987, he died in New York.
