Edmund Darch Lewis

1835 - 1910

Edmund Darch Lewis was born in 1835 in Philadelphia.  He studied painting under Paul Weber and his paintings were first shown at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.  His early landscapes focused on the Philadelphia area and he gradually started painting New York and New England (he visited the White Mountains frequently).  Later in his career, he painted more seascapes and shore scenes.  He was very popular and was one of the most financially successful artists during the 19th century.  He died in Philadelphia in 1910.
