George Clare

1830 – 1900

George Clare was born in 1830 in England.
He lived in Birmingham during the 1860’s, though the
rest of his life was spent in Barnet, Hertfordshire, England.
Unknown is his artistic training, though his delicate
stippling technique is derived from William Henry Hunt.
He exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1864, 1866 and 1867,
as well as at the British Institution, established as a rival to
the Royal Academy. Two
of George’s sons Oliver and Vincent were also artists and became
quite famous for their still life and flower paintings.
He died in 1900.
