In 1916, McClees mounted an exhibition
entitled “Philadelphia’s First Exhibition of Advanced Modern Art” which
was organized by Morton Schamberg and included works by Henri Matisse,
Picasso, George Braque, Joseph Stella and Max Weber. According to an
interview with Pennsylvania artist Elizabeth Sparhawk-Jones, “[McClees] were
the only people there that had a gallery that could be rented and [Schamberg]
sat there for a whole month on a sofa in the middle of that room and
discussed and explained with the populace as it came in the pictures to make
them understand them better... he sat in the middle of it and explained it
to people whether they were shocked or disapproving or uninterested.” It was
the first showing of European abstract art in Philadelphia.
